A Foundational Story

Stories shape who we are and reflect how we see the world. My imagination was captured by this ancient legend about St. Brigid of Ireland. In this creation story of Ireland, the Earth is a chaotic mess. When the Earth cries out in pain, Brigid alone hears the weeping of the Earth.

“The Earth cries because it has dreamed of Beauty,” she claims.

And so Brigid throws her mantle around the chaos of the earth, and “makes gladness in the abyss.” She brings forth a lush landscape through her compassionate creativity.

I find the image of “making gladness” to be a powerful one; it’s an invitation to flourish regardless of our life circumstances.
